Greenwood High School junior Beck Pennington defeated Louisville St. Xavier’s Alex Gornet May 28 to win the boys' singles championship in the Kentucky State Tennis Tournament in Lexington. It is the first state championship in tennis for Greenwood. Pennington, the top seed entering the tournament, won the first set 6-4 but lost the second 6-1. He was leading 4-2 in the third set when Gornet retired, apparently too exhausted to continue. Pennington won six matches in three days to claim the championship.
